SSN:

Social Security Number

A nine-digit number issued to US citizens, permanent residents, and temporary (working) residents as a part of the Social Security Act. The number is issued to an individual by the Social Security Administration (SSA), an independent agency of the United States government. Its primary purpose is to track individuals for Social Security purposes.

Hospitals typically use SSN, in conjunction with MRN, as unique patient identifiers.
